Ruth Richards teaches an African Drum Class here at the store, with emphasis on traditional rhythms from West Africa. She was taught by a master drummer on the east coast, and in turn performed with and taught with him for 7 years there. She also directed an all-women's drum ensemble here in Sebastopol and has played for several African dance classes on both coasts. In her class, you will learn how to play the djembe with correct hand position and the djun djun (bass drums) also if you are interested. Classes are taught in groups of 5-7 people (mixed gender) in order to effectively learn and play these polyrhythms. Drumming can be very grounding and you will learn the art of total focus! No experience necessary. It's alot of fun getting to know each other and playing music together in a relaxed atmosphere. Bring your own djembe or you can use one from the store during class time. Classes are usually 4 or 6 week sessions. Please contact Ruth directly for more information at: drumqueen.ruth@gmail.com
